Fastest Selling Used Car | January 2019

Mercedes-Benz takes the gold as the GLC named January’s fastest selling car

  • 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class diesel automatic was the UK’s fastest selling used car in January
  • Big is best as SUVs make up 6 of the top 10 national fastest selling
  • Petrol dominate regional accounting for 62% of the fastest selling
  • Retailers using Auto Trader’s i-Control data management solution see a 53% faster stock turn

SUVs continued their dominance of the second-hand car market in January, making up the three fastest selling used cars in the UK. The Mercedes-Benz GLC took the gold and bronze, with the 2018 diesel automatic and 2015 diesel automatic respectively, whilst the 2016 Vauxhall Mokka petrol automatic took silver.

Big was clearly best last month, as eight of the top 10 national list was either an SUV, cross over, or MPV, whilst also taking the top spot in seven of the 13 countries and regions tracked: North West (2015 Nissan Qashqai petrol automatic – 18 days), West Midlands (2018 Vauxhall Mokka X petrol manual – 28 days), South East (2015 Vauxhall Mokka petrol automatic – 23 days ), London (Nissan Qashqai petrol automatic – 16 days), Northern Ireland (2015 Hyundai Tucson diesel manual -  36 days), South (2015 Hyundai Tucson diesel manual - 19 days), and the South West (2016 Nissan Qashqai diesel manual – 38 days).

Karolina Edwards-Smajda, Auto Trader’s Director of Commercial Products, said:Consumers might be facing economic and political uncertainty around Brexit, but as we saw with the solid last quarter sales, it’s not necessarily translating to people delaying their next car purchase. And with premium SUVs dominating the fastest selling lists, consumers are still largely happy to splash out for their perfect used car.

Hitting targets will always be determined by how quickly a retailer can turn their stock around and using data is the key to speeding it up. Users of i-Control, Auto Trader’s data management solution, took an average of just 29 days to sell a car in January, compared to a market average of 53% faster than those that don’t use the data management tool.

Karolina continued: “With today’s car buyers being more discerning than ever, having the right stock on your forecourt is key. Using data to complement your own experience can make all the difference in not only identifying the most desirable vehicles for your area, but also pricing them at a level consumers can trust, helping to sell more cars, more quickly, and for more profit.”
